People may think that since nails are just a small part of our body, taking care of them is not that important as others would not easily notice these nails. Contrary to this belief, nails can be easily seen by everyone that we meet and talk to as we use our hands when we communicate. This exposes our nails to be seen very easily even in simple conversation. This is why having good nail care habits is also important in personal grooming.

The basics of nail care that you should keep in mind are keep them trim and clean. This prevents other problems from arising such as cracked nails and infection. Keeping nails trim will also prevent them from interfering with your work, especially if you use your hands often. Scratching yourself is also a possibility with long nails.

Aside from these usual tips, you should also keep in mind that nails are continually growing and these get the nutrients that it needs from the food that you eat. Eating a diet that is full of vitamins, calcium protein and zinc will be good for your nails, especially of your nails are already soft and brittle. These nutrients will help make your nails stronger and less prone to breaking. Drinking lots of water to keep your body hydrated will also help a lot in maintaining healthy nails.

When using nail polish, remember to always start with a base coat to serve as a protection for your nails and to strengthen them as well. After this has dried, you can apply a topcoat to make your nails shiny and glossy. But choosing the correct nail polish is also important as some may contain formaldehyde. Using acetone-based nail polish remover may also be a cause for dry nails; use this at most once a week, or better yet, use soy based polish remover to protect your nails from damage.

One thing that you should also remember when using nail polish is that it is made from synthetic chemicals. Constant exposure to such chemicals may weaken your nails and cause them to change color. It will be better for your nails if you rest them from nail polish from time to time so that they will not suffer form the effects of the synthetic chemicals.

Some mistakes that a lot of people commonly make are during filing of their nails. Some people file their nails right after trimming them. This is not recommended as nails are more prone to cracking at this state. A better time to file your nails is after putting on nail polish. This prevents nails from splitting easily due to the added protection given by the nail polish. Filing of nails should also be in one direction only to minimize the opposing forces applied to your nails.

Bad habits that you should avoid when it comes to nails are of course, nail biting. This will give you ugly looking nails as well as sharp edges which can cause accidents. Using nails as tools also exposes them to damage. Lastly, one should use gloves when handling chemicals or detergents as these are bad for both your nails and your skin.

Having good nail care habits will help you give a good impression with the people that you meet and work with. All you will need to do is keep them trim and clean, and follow the advice given here so that your nails will remain nice and presentable.
